CONFERENCE SETTING

Spain in general is a safe country, and as such has become an inviting place for tourism due to its many attractions which include gastronomy, architecture, coastal towns and cultural attractions. Nevertheless, like any other country, we need to exercise normal safety precautions and common sense. Terrorism has caused a sense of panic affecting every corner of the world. Various European cities have been recently attacked by some of these acts of violence. Barcelona is a recent example (August 2017). In response to this attack, the Spanish Government introduced heightened security measures in public places, such as shopping areas, tourist hubs and major events, and as such there has been no repeat of any violence recorded to date.

There are other threats that also need to be addressed because they are directly related to the safety of children and young people in schools. Feeling safe at school is one of the most important aspects for the personal and academic development of a student. However, this does not happen all the time. Bullying, racism, intolerance, humiliation, homophobia, and intimidation may happen at times and it is our responsibility to work against it through prevention and the suitable conflict management.

There are countries that suffer from internal disputes among their own people, countries where natural disasters can bring about destruction and chaos, countries where nuclear and industrial plants pollute the environment and cause health problems for the population.

One of the most common problems but least visible threat is that of cybercrimes. It tends to be low profile, but Governments around the world have significantly tightened safety measures and have worked diligently to be at the cutting-edge for protection.

But let’s not focus on the issues, but rather on what we can do to improve our world. Together we are strong, together we can bring light to darkness. The future is ours.

RESEARCH SETTING

We suggest that you adopt a “glocal” approach in your contributions to the conference. We need to go towards a clear global strategic direction along with the flexibility to adapt to local characteristics and requirements. This approach helps to build a shared vision, broadens perspectives and enables internal and external cooperation
